TOP THREE WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR ESSAY CONTEST

 

DEARBORN, MICHIGAN, Congratulations to Maria Vena, Freshman, Nicholas Rachwal, Junior, of Divine Child High School, and Fatima Taj, Senior, of Fordson High School for winning the top three spots in the annual Dearborn Optimist Club Essay Contest based on a theme of “Can society Function Without Respect?”

 

Miss Vena, first place winner will have her essay sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the district.  College scholarships are available for top winners at the district level.

 

“Miss Vena did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme.  She expressed herself well through the essay and deserved the honor of first place,” Hannah Hawthorne, Club President said.

 

The Optimist Club of Dearborn has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for over 45 years and has been active in the community since 1940.  Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include Oratorical Contest, Art Contest and Respect for Law.

January meeting 2018

The January meeting of the Dearborn Optimist will take place on Wednesday January 10 with a working lunch at M & M Café - 13714 Michigan Ave, Dearborn, MI 48126 beginning at 12:00 noon.  Free parking is available behind the Café in the public parking lot.  Meeting attendees can order food and beverage from the menu and be responsible for cost related to their order.  Please note that the M & M Café is cash only and does not accept credit cards. 

 At 12:45 pm, directly following the lunch meeting a private docent led tour of the Arab American National Museum will take place.  Please note that the Arab American National Museumis located next door to M & M Café.  The museum tour is sponsored allowing no-cost admission for participants.

As always guests are encouraged and welcome to attend.

The next meeting of the Dearborn Optimist will take place on Wednesday October 11, beginning at 12:00 noon.  The meeting will feature guest speaker Barry Murray, Director of Economic Development, City of Dearborn.  Barry will provide comments on new economic development projects and an update on the $1.2 Billion Ford Motor Co. redevelopment plan.

This meeting will take place at Henry Ford College Fifty-One O One student run restaurant Kuhlmann Dining room. Free parking is available in the gated lot to the north of the dining room. Tell the guard that you are attending the Optimist meeting for access.

December Programing - 2016

December programs include the following;

Regular Meeting of Wednesday December 7 at 12:00 noon - Double Tree Dearborn Detroit, 5801 Southfield Expressway, Detroit, MI 48228.  This program will focus on the Junior Optimist.  The members of the Advanced Technology Academy (ATA) will present on their chapters programing for 2016-2017.  New members will be inducted into the ATA Junior Optimist group. Please join us for this regular December meeting.  

Holiday Party - Saturday December 10 - The Holiday Season is here you are invited to the Annual Optimist Christmas Party!    We have a change in venue as this year we are at Bailey’s 22091 Michigan Avenue in West Dearborn on Saturday December 10th at 6 to 8PM.    You will enjoy the Deluxe Buffet dinner and the company of your fellow Optimist and guests.  The cost per person is $30 each and we will all have our own bar tabs.    This is the last call for reservations!  Send your list of attendees to joconnor@ci.dearborn.mi.us and mail checks made out to the Optimist Club of Dearborn to:  526 S. Detroit Red Wings Outing Tuesday December 13 game starts at 7:30-  Detroit Red Wings V Arizona Coyotes REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT. For those who registered for this event tickets are going into the mail today.  A group is meeting at Nemo's 1384 Michigan Ave., Detroit prior to the game beginning at 5:30.  Nemo's offers free parking at their site and a round trip shuttle service to Joe Lewis Arena.  The shuttle cost $3.00 per person. Keep an eye on your mail this week for the tickets.  The JLA Box Office is mailing the tickets out today.  Contact Hannah Hawthorne with questions.

The Holiday Season is rapidly approaching and you are invited to the Annual Optimist Christmas Party!    We have a change in venue as this year we are at Bailey’s 22091 Michigan Avenue in West Dearborn on Saturday December 10th at 6 to 8PM.    You will enjoy the Deluxe Buffet dinner and the company of your fellow Optimist and guests.    The cost per person is $30 each and we will all have our own bar tabs.    Please let me know how many people will be joining you as soon as possible (no later than the end of November please), so we can arrange to accommodate all.   Send your list of attendees to my e-mail address and promptly mail checks made out to the Optimist Club of Dearborn to:  526 S. The Dearborn Optimist Honored members of the Public Safety Community at the annual Respect for Law Program on May 11th.  The 2016 awardees include - Judge William C. Hultgren, Lifetime Achievement Award; Chief Ronald Haddad, Meritorious Service Award; Cpl. Jane Kass, Police Officer of the year; Lt. Mariam Hoballah, Police Explorer of the year; Daniel Maironis, Firefighter of the year and William Querfeld, Fire Cadet of the year.
