February Essay Contest Winners Announced

DEARBORN, MICHIGAN, Congratulations to Maria Vena, Freshman, Nicholas Rachwal, Junior, of Divine Child High School, and Fatima Taj, Senior, of Fordson High School for winning the top three spots in the annual Dearborn Optimist Club Essay Contest based on a theme of “Can society Function Without Respect?”


Miss Vena, first place winner will have her essay sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the district.  College scholarships are available for top winners at the district level.


“Miss Vena did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme.  She expressed herself well through the essay and deserved the honor of first place,” Hannah Hawthorne, Club President said.


The Optimist Club of Dearborn has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for over 45 years and has been active in the community since 1940.  Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include Oratorical Contest, Art Contest and Respect for Law.

1st Place:  $500 - Maria Vena, Freshman, Divine Child High School (Essay # 3)
2nd Place:  $250 - Nicholas Rachwal, Junior, Divine Child High School (Essay #16)
3rd Place:  $150 - Fatima Taj, Senior, Fordson High School (Essay #12)
