Pretty eventful meeting today, David Mustonen from Dearborn public schools came by to give us some information about the proposed SMART Bond for 2013. “SMART” being used as an acronym for Safety, Modification, Additions, Renovation and Technology/Transportation and this will be the first bond issued to the district in over 10 years. The district plans to update the Security in the 35 schools in response the recent school violence stories that have been making headlines making the building safer for students.

The bond also hopes increase the allotted budget for preventative maintenance of the buildings, over the past 5 years per student funding has been cut 8.1% reducing the average 5 million dollar budget for maintenance down to merely 1 million, spread that out between 35 buildings and it’s easy to see that regular maintenance has to be put aside in order to prepare for unforeseen emergency repairs.

It’s not all doom and gloom the district has seen steady increase to enrollment which is a blessing but also posses another problem of space. The bond hopes to address this through modifications and renovations and also giving a few building additions to compensate for increased enrollment.

State of Michigan is going to be requiring that all schools test all of their students electronically by the year 2015, this will replace the current MEAP testing we all remember form high school, the bond will allow the district to update its technology infrastructure to make way for this new requirement by installing new networking equipment and computers.

Last but not least the bond will enable the district to replace some of its aging fleet of 100 buses. Of an average lifespan of 10 years the average age of the fleet is 9 years replacing some of the fleet will allow the district to get back on track for a replacement cycle.

Attached at the bottom of this post is document detailing more information about the proposed bond.

Finally, Dave gave an outstanding new program with Henry Ford Community College which allows high performing students to attend classes at HFCC tuition free with the possibility of a fifth year of high school so they graduate with a 2 year degree.
